Race Newsletter #4 - June 2015

Our fourth race Newsletter is now available to view (click the image, or here). This edition features a very long range weather forecast from our BoM expert Karina Tarbath, who spoke to us about forecast prevailing conditions and other weather phenomena at our last Chinwag in WA. We are also excited to announce The Classic Safari Company Raffle and our newest Major Sponsor!

For the competitive, we discuss race scoring principles and how the GPS results are calculated.

Well done to participants and donors who have helped us raise just shy of $100,000 at time of writing. The flying doctor is watching our progress very closely. Keep it up!

Team fundraising total approaching $100,000!

EDH Widget not loaded

Our team fundraising total is rapidly approaching $100,000, thanks to some recent efforts from teams such as The Altitude Chasers ($15,000 fundraising dinner) and The Instrumentals ($5,000 donation from Jandakot Airport Holdings).

We are targeting $250,000 raised by teams which does not include funds raised from event sponsors and other sources. The actual current total fundraising figure is very impressive and a closely guarded secret, which we look forward to announcing at the Hamilton Island finish party!

You can see the new total fundraising widget on our leaderboard page here: http://www.outbackairrace.com.au/leaderboard

Race Planning Update - Chinwag #4

Our fourth race planning update will be held this coming Tuesday 9th June at the Royal Aero Club of WA, Jandakot. With less than three months to go before we all meet in Esperance there is a lot to cover!

We will be joined by a weather expert from the Bureau of Meteorology who will talk about expected weather en route.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Steadfast Foundation as Naming Rights Supporter!

We are excited to announce that Steadfast Foundation have joined us as our Naming Rights Supporter! Going forward we will be known as the Steadfast Outback Air Race which, coincidentally, shortens to SOAR!

Steadfast and its brokers actively support the communities in which they live and work, typically donating around 1% of net profit after tax to charitable causes each financial year.

Steadfast created the Steadfast Foundation to facilitate grants and charitable contributions that support charities helping people overcome adversity, with $1.3 million in donations made in its first 10 years.

The Steadfast Foundation is guided by the Steadfast Foundation Board which is responsible for reviewing all submissions and will make its funding decisions for the benefit of the community and in alignment with the philosophy of the Foundation.

Charities are often chosen based on the recommendations of members of the Steadfast network and include cancer research and support, mental health, surf lifesaving, children’s causes and charities supporting the homeless and disadvantaged.

Charities supported include BeyondBlue, McGrath Foundation, Surf Life Saving, Salvation Army, Startlight Foundation, Prostate Cancer Foundation and of course, the RFDS.

Thanks to a connection one of our organising committee had with the Steadfast group, we are very proud to have them join us as the event Naming Rights supporter and look forward to working with them over coming months and throughout the race. This is a very exciting connection for us and their support for us and the RFDS, really is incredibly generous.

Race Newsletter #3 - May 2015

Our third race newsletter is now available to view - click HERE. With only 3 months to go until race start, there is a lot happening including participant access to their free AvPlan subscriptions, planning for a lunch fly-in at Davenport Downs, final registrations, and more.

Our guest speaker was Jan Ende who has provided his expert advice on caring for your aircraft.

We aim to provide an entertaining race update for non-participants, however for race participants we consider this a "must read" to assist with your planning and for the committee to communicate important information.

The Instrumentals on Facebook

The Instrumentals have an excellent Twitter and Facebook campaign underway. In particular, we really like their entertaining (and slightly worrying!) promo video filmed in their hanger. We're expecting more good things from them in the future - click on the links to like and follow them!

THE INSTRUMENTALS live: watch the way that we do it!

Posted by Outback Air Race 2015: The Instrumentals for RFDS on Wednesday, May 6, 2015

We are now active on twitter, follow us on @outbackairrace and find other participants tweeting, including Mockingjay and The Instrumentals

RFDS Altitude Ball

We thought the Altitude Ball might be of interest to Outback Air Race followers. It is hosted by the RFDS WA section (not the Outback Air Race), on the 25th July at the Grand Ballroom, Crown Perth. Click on the banner to find out more!

Race Planning Update - Chinwag #3

We welcome you to our third race planning update at 7pm this Tuesday 12th May at the Royal Aero Club of WA, Jandakot. A key milestone was reached since our last update with Accommodation (and clothing) forms going out, as we get closer to the race start in August. We have also had to close registrations early due to our event capacity being reached!

In addition to an update from the committee, Jan Ende (LAME, Commercial Pilot and Outback Air Race veteran) has volunteered his time to talk to us about all things bush flying including preparation, maintenance and spares.

All are welcome.. Pizza will be available and the bar will be open.
